Digital Performers

As I was working on some of the post and editing on our first podcast this evening, I came across an impressive demonstration of facial motion capture technology that I thought I might share. For those of you who witnessed some of the impressive CGI in Beowulf, this reel represents the next step in the evolution of realistic human actors.

A high resolution demonstration is here:

There are those that would argue that computer-generated art can never be as emotionally compelling as its analog counterpart, but every once in a while you happen across an artist whose work challenges the very way you think about the use of technology. Such is the case with Robert Hodgin, currently member of a creative shop known as Barbarian Group in San Francisco. Robert applies an obviously deep knowledge of programming, a keen eye and deft hand to his pieces, many of which combine algorithmically generated imagery and evocative soundtracks to stunning effect. The result is unlike anything else you’re likely to have seen yet.

Below is a sample of his work – and for more, visit him on the web at his Blog or on Vimeo
